Michael Jackson: The Iconic Figure of Black Music

Today we lost not only a great singer but an awesome entertainer, dancer and legend. Michael Jackson was an iconic figure within black music. He broke through musical barriers that open doors for artists such as Usher, Chris Brown, Genuine, Justin Timberlake, Ne-yo and many, many more. His dance moves have been copied, transformed and reinvented. He stood as the pillar of success. He was an iconic figure for black music, point blank. Noone can dispute this fact. If you try, well then you are simply being a hater. He is credited with changing the way artists deals were made, especially black artists. He had star power, demaned alot from the industry and gave back more to the industry than most artists. With the exception of a few greats, Michael was "it." The true meaning of a "star." They don't make entertainers like Mike anymore so today we should honor his accomplishments: 100 million albums sold, number one singles, countless grammy's and worldwide success. Michael Jackson, an iconic figure of black music.

  1. Not to mention the fact that he was a humanitarian. I watched this woman on the news talk about how his music got her through her tour of duty in the military. This is a prime example of how music touches the soul.

  2. Oh..definitely...he reached across so many lines..i really wanted to go deeper into his life but it's too much writing..so i just threw something up so it could be documented today, on the day he passed away.

  3. This is definitely a cause for discussion. Although he was inspired by James Brown, Jackie Wilson, Fred Astaire and countless others...Michael Jackson set the foundation for modern day entertainment. No one in the entertainment industry has ever been as big as him. And those who strive to be like him actually want to be as big or bigger than him.

But this really brings into question is...what direction is music and entertainment going in? We have to really think about that now and hopefully Michaels death inspires all entertainers to take it back to raw passion, soul, and even true pop.

We MUST regain some direction with music once again and show some respect for music overall.

  4. Ahhh man! Great point. I really think we have strayed away for the true artistry...Michael benefited from real artist development which is lacking now! There arent any real, true stars, entertainers right now. It is difficult to see us getting out of this microwave type industry. I hope it shifts and soon.

  5. Yeah...and it seems the old school industry leaders have completely retired. Did your hear Don Cornelius say he swore he'd never come back to the forefront (until the Ojays came to him) and he planned on leaving it up to the younger generation. But people like him need to come back to the industry because it's so screwed up. We don't have "music mentors" anymore.

We need new people like Barry Gordy who helped develop artists from start to finish and Quincy Jones who still makes sure he only attaches his name to quality music.
